About this template
This is the requirement set behind Olive's research into warehouse management systems: 176 requirements in 18 sections. Five sections cover the work of the warehouse itself, from inventory and fulfillment to automation and mobile scanning. Seven cover the platform, from integrations to compliance, and six cover the vendor, its support and its cost.
It is written for operations, supply chain and IT teams choosing a WMS, whether for a single distribution center, an ecommerce fulfillment operation or a third-party logistics (3PL) business. Each section below says why it matters and how far apart vendors are on it in the research.
How to use it
Start with the sections, not the requirements. Decide which sections carry the most weight for your operation, then go through the requirements in each one and drop what does not apply. A 3PL will weigh multi-client inventory and billing heavily; a highly automated distribution center will care most about automation, robotics and scalability.
Put the same list to every vendor, in the same words, and ask for a score and evidence on each line. A requirement list only compares vendors fairly when every vendor answers the same questions.
Warehouse operations
These five sections cover the work of the warehouse: inventory, order fulfillment, daily operations, automation and robotics, and mobile access on the floor. They are why a WMS is bought, and in Olive's WMS research every vendor scores higher on them than on the platform or the vendor sections.
Inventory Management
10 requirementsAccurate inventory by location is the foundation of every other warehouse process. Real-time tracking, cycle counting, lot and serial control and low-stock alerts decide whether the system can be trusted when an order comes in.
